Maintaining Your Beard

The health of your beard is based on your overall health. It is tied to your genes, health and testosterone levels. So, the first thing you should think about when maintaining a healthy beard, is to maintain a healthy lifestyle. You can’t do anything about the genes you inherited but you can eat healthy and exercise regularly. Eating well will help your body, and your beard, get the vitamins it needs to grow strong and healthy. Exercising promotes a healthy lifestyle as well as raising testosterone levels. Having higher levels of testosterone will help grow your beard faster and thicker.

There are countless articles and websites that claim they can get you fit and healthy, so we wont be getting into that here. Our main concern is the daily maintenance needed for your beard. Most people think they need to shampoo their beard every day, but this doesn’t help your beard. Just like the hair on your head, beards will lose their natural oils if you shampoo it every day. By stripping your beard of its natural oils, it will be more prone to breakage, frizzyness and split ends. Basically, if you wash it out its natural oils you’ll leave it looking like a bird’s nest instead of a lions mane.

You don’t need to shampoo your beard everyday, the same way you shouldn’t do that with head hair, although you should still shampoo and condition it at least once a week. Shampooing once a week is enough to keep your beard clean. Once your out of the shower, apply beard oil to your damp beard to give it more nutrients. It will moisturize your hairs and the skin underneath, which was not reached during the shower. It will make your beard shiny and smooth. After you have properly applied beard oil, you can blow dry your beard on low and use a wide-toothed comb to style it. Blow drying on anything higher then medium will destroy your hairs and negate the effects of the beard oil. It will leave split ends and undo the whole process of maintaining your beard. If you have a really big beard, and blow drying it isn’t enough to get the look you wanted, apply beard balm into your hair and then blow dry it with the comb. It’ll help tame the beard and get the look you want.

That’s it for maintaining a healthy good-looking beard. Remember, eat well, exercise, shampoo and condition your beard once a week and use beard oil every day. Make it a part of your daily routine and your beard will grow healthy and strong!
